A couple of days ago I was walking out by the hoop houses and surprised a Coopers Hawk who was dining on one of our smaller chickens. Hawks and owls dine in spurts. Some weeks we lose one a day and some weeks we lose none. We consider the chicken loses a cost of doing business. Not every pastured poultry company feels that way. One bigger company south of here arms their worker with a shotgun. Another approach is the company in Georgia that is losing so many chickens to bald eagle attacks that they are offering eagle viewing tours. However, the organic “free range” chicken found on so many store shelves is not threatened by aerial predators. That is because most of the chickens stay inside the confinement house. These birds have the option to go out into the small fenced enclosure next to the chicken house, but only a small percentage usually venture out.
