Spring, on the farm

On Our Farm

We are in those mysteriously invigorating days of spring when everything is so fresh and new and delightful. Green grass, the progression of spring flowers, leaves on the trees, and birds and insects making their appearance. Once again, the martins just amaze us at their joy as they sit and chirp at us, or gracefully soar over our farm. We wonder what they could tell us about where they spent the winter.

Our home temperatures are as close to not needing additional heat or cool as they will probably get until fall. We just had a brief cold snap, and we are wondering if that was blackberry winter. The blackberries are outdoing themselves with blossoms right now. We will see.

The Animals

Most of the time, now, we have chickens in every hoop house and brooder. There is an endless list of tasks for tending to them, including moving them across the pasture. Jim and Isaac keep things running smoothly, as much is humanly possible. Our new hired hand is learning the ways of the farm, and hopes to gain skills to get him work elsewhere when the season ends here. Friday morning we received a load of GMO-free corn to grind and mix in our feed for the chickens.

We have bought some fine looking steers from the Frescoln Ranch that we expect to be ready in September and at the end of the year. We still have some available for June processing, also.
